ISI (SSCI) Recognition

In my last editorial, in ABM (Vol. 6/1), I mentioned that we were looking forward to the response to our application for ISI (SSCI) listing. I am now very pleased to be able to report that ABM has been accepted, as of October 2007.

As readers will probably know, the SSCI is an interdisciplinary citation index compiled by Thomson Scientific. Its database covers over 1,700 of the world's leading social science journals, including 86 in the business and management arena. Our inclusion in this prestigious index establishes ABM as a leading journal in its field, particularly with regard to Asia. I would like to thank those who backed our application and everyone who has supported ABM since its launch in 2002, whether in editorial or advisory capacities or as contributors or reviewers. Over the six years of our life we have created an intellectual community of scholars who are keen to develop ideas and perspectives on business and management in Asia at the cutting edge of social science. Our acceptance in SSCI is a reflection of the engagement of this community.

ABM is an independent journal seeking to draw attention to critical business and management issues relevant to modern society. In this connection, we have launched two 'calls for papers' on global issues in the region: one is a special issue on business and climate change in Asia, and the other is on globalization and CSR in Asia. These special issues, which will be continued over three consecutive years, will address these topics critically, analytically and exploratively, drawing in perspectives from beyond the usual boundaries of business and management studies, and expanding the attention of our field into the global issues affecting all human beings. We would be glad to hear from anyone already engaged in such issues who may be interested in submitting a paper for consideration: please see http://www.palgrave-journals.com/abm/call_for_papers.html for further details.

We are keen, too, to bring India — one of the world's major expanding economies, and one where the particular concerns of ABM are becoming more apparent — into our research boundary and to publish special editions on emerging issues there. To this end, we have invited Vipin Gupta (Simmons College School of Management) and Pawan Budhwar (Aston Business School) to join the editorial board and help us to organize special issues. We anticipate an informative special issue of ABM on India in the near future.

Our aim, as ever, is to publish not just innovative research, but research illuminated with ideas and perspectives that spotlight the impact of business and management upon human communities and the world we live in, including both civil society and the natural world. While functional and managerial researches are important, we believe that research that does not address social contexts and implications is greatly diminished. Our call is for contextual and holistic approaches to the broader study of business and management today, and we hope that our ISI recognition will attract papers meeting these criteria, and further ABM's distinctive voice in its field.
