Solid lines indicate the mean origination and extinction rate for each year with shaded areas representing the 95% highest probability densities. Tables provide sampling frequencies for shift point probabilities. Car silhouettes represent models that either originated (1933 Nash Ambassador and 1984 Dodge Caravan) or went extinct (1935 LaSalle Series 50 and 1960 Edsel Ranger) at the estimated shift points. Red shaded areas represent significant global economic events that are commonly thought to influence car diversity including the Great Depression (I), World War II (II) and the Arab Oil Crisis (III).
