Australian postdoctoral researchers would like to stay in research careers, but a number of reasons to leave research careers cause roadblocks. More than 80% of respondents would like to stay in research in the medium- or long-term, and 16% would prefer a career outside research in the immediate or near future (a). The primary reasons to leave careers in research (both at 37%) were a lack of job security and a shortage of funding (b).
