Abstract

The number of organizations worldwide dedicated to Corporate Social Responsibility is fast increasing. Many organizations working on sustainable development, human development, human rights, or environmental conservation, such as Amnesty International or the International Institute on Environment and Development (IIED, London), have recently developed CSR programmes. In this short edition of Window on the World, we give a brief, somewhat arbitrary, glimpse of this diversity.

Accountability

AccountAbility is an international, not-for-profit, professional institute dedicated to the promotion of social, ethical and overall organizational accountability, a precondition for achieving sustainable development. Its main activities include: creation of a credible assurance standard and underlying accountability framework; provision of quality professional development and certification; advocating an enabling public policy environment for organizational accountability; developing innovative 'ideas-for-action' through research and practise.

Corporate Accountability

Corporate Accountability aims to facilitate the flow of information among NGOs and social movements who believe that their governments, private sector and civil society need to make greater efforts to ensure the accountability of business and industry, especially transnational corporations, to society. It contains information about ongoing civil society campaigns on corporate accountability and about NGOs and trade unions who are active in this field. It provides comprehensive material on codes of conduct, multi-stakeholder initiatives and intergovernmental processes, as well as best and worst practice cases of corporate behaviour. Its website makes available documents and publications on corporate accountability and links to relevant research institutes and databases.

CCRS Centre for Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability at the University of Zürich

A newly created research institute dedicated to the topic of corporate responsibility, notably in the financial centre.

CSR Europe

CSR Europe is a pan-European business membership organization that help its members to develop CSR strategies in line with their business objectives. It also provides an important platform for the dissemination of best practices and know-how in terms of CSR, and for facilitating dialogue between business leaders and other stakeholders, including the European Commission. CSR Europe has recently promoted the European Business Campaign on Corporate Social Responsibility.

The Copenhagen Centre

TCC is an autonomous, international institution established following the 1995 UN World Summit for Social Development and the 1997 Copenhagen Conference 'New Partnership for Social Cohesion'. TCC aims to identify, develop and produce knowledge about corporate social responsibility with a particular focus on new social partnerships.

PiC is an Indian NGO that grew out of ActionAid India and that aims to promote the adoption of CSR policies. PiC's activities focus on advocacy, notably by helping NGOs to engage with the corporate sector, and on capacity building. It is also a leading proponent of corporate responsibility within the South. Asian region, and a co-founder of the South Asian Alliance for Responsible Business (SARB).

The Siri Company

The Siri Company is the largest independent provider of research and professional services to investors on the environmental, social, and ethical performance of companies. It is composed of eleven research organizations based in North-America, Europe and Australia.

World Business Council on Sustainable Development

Created in 1992, WBCSD is the leading business association dedicated to enhancing the role of business in promoting sustainable development issues. Its work is mainly organized in working groups along industry lines, and aims to define best practices and identify the 'business case' for corporate social responsibility policies.
