Balancing Peace with Justice in the Aftermath of Violent Conflict1
Rama Mani
1This article highlights succinctly some of the main arguments I have elaborated in the book Beyond Retribution: Seeking Justice in the Shadows of War. Cambridge: Polity and Blackwell Publishers, 2002), and other articles I have written subsequently on these issues. In the interest of brevity, notes and references are reduced to the minimum, and interested readers are referred to the book for details of issues and illustrative cases mentioned here.
Abstract
In her discussions of the different forms of justice, Rama Mani argues that international peacebuilders have sometimes imposed rather than proposed and facilitated solutions. She proposes that in order to rejoin peace and justice there must be a 'social compact' forged between all stakeholders in post-conflict societies: civilians and combatants, citizens and governments, international peacebuilders and national recipients.
Keywords:
transitional justice, Washington consensus, peacebuilders, post-conflict societies
