Hans Singer – the gentle giant1

Richard Jolly

1 This article was originally presented as a lecture in Geneva in the ILO on 18 May, 2006, though the present version has been edited and considerably shortened. I owe to Louis Emmerij the choice of gentle to indicate Hans's qualities as a giant of the UN and of development. Louis has written his own memoir, Hans Singer – the gentle breeze. There is an excellent biography of Hans by D. John Shaw (2002).
