Abstract

Gretchen Fox explores how the recent entry of Mi'kmaq people into the commercial fisheries after a legal decision upholding their treaty rights is affecting negotiations over fisheries management, as well as shaping local orientations to the development of Mi'kmaq commercial fisheries. She suggests that the development of successful and sustainable commercial fisheries must take into account local communities' unique histories, knowledge and practices.
