Abstract
Based on his opening speech at the World Congress of SID on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, Jos J. van Gennip explores the dichotomies of development underlining its gains and failures to date. He argues that the MDGs and the new cooperation agreements in Europe as well as the engagement of youth provide hope for the future.
