Abstract
This essay gives an account of the Center on Organizational Innovation at Columbia University. Established in 2000, the center promotes research on the social bases of reflexivity in organizations. Heterarchy is one such form, involving lateral accountability and the productive friction of competing criteria of worth. The dissonance of diverse organizational principles can lead to discovery.
