The White Brothel: The Literary Exoneration of the Pornographic

Susanne Kappeler is senior lecturer in English at the University of Rabat, where she teaches a seminar on the literary representation of women. She also taught 'the literary representation of women' at the Faculty of English at Cambridge while a research fellow at Jesus College, and was a tutor for the Open University course, 'The Changing Experience of Women'.

This paper was first written in part for the 'English Studies Group' at the University of East Anglia and owes its motivation to the joint struggle with Diane DeBell to make the feminist voice a part in that group's debate on the 'literary'. The voice had to be helped by the typewriter.

The paper has since become part of an extended reassessment of the 'literary' from a feminist point of view.
