Research Interests: Cross-national research on how firms respond to and manage differences in their institutional environments, including both formal institutions—political, regulatory and legal institutions—as well as informal institutions, such as norms, values and culture. How firms manage political risk in industries recently subject to market oriented-reform, primarily electricity and telecoms. Risk in such industries stems not just from weak or underdeveloped political and regulatory institutions, but also from the fact that policies such as privatization, liberalization and deregulation are sometimes adopted in response to external influences—such as multilateral lenders—even though they are at odds with a country’s widely-held values and norms. Organizational underpinnings of the deterrent effect of various forms of “distance” on foreign direct investment in such industries. Imprinting and organizational learning, as well as gravity models of trade.
