CALLS FOR PAPERS

Forum on the State of the IR Discipline in Central and Eastern Europe

Deadline for abstracts (200 words): 30 April 2008

The Journal of International Relations and Development, as the official journal of the Central and Eastern European International Studies Association (CEEISA), encourages debate on IR from a regional perspective. IR studies in the region have experienced a dynamic development since the late 1980s, when they were either non-existent or subject to heavy political tutelage, preventing any free intellectual growth and exchange within them. Times have changed, and there is now dynamic research and discussion of IR themes in CEE. However, in spite of these vibrant regional IR communities, their contribution to "Western" IR in terms of publications, projects and conference participation has been limited. The CEE and Western IR communities in fact know quite little about each other, and debates in CEE are virtually unknown to the broader discipline of IR. The Forum would like to fill in this knowledge gap by inviting scholars who work in CEE or who are in contact with the region to reflect on their experiences.

Some questions relevant to the topic include:

  • What are the major issues at stake in the CEE IR debates? To what extent can these issues be linked with the debates in Western Europe and the USA?
  • Does IR enjoy disciplinary and political autonomy, or is it dominated by other disciplines or political interests?
  • How is "Western“ IR percieved in CEE and what kind of impact does it have on IR studies there?
  • What are the prevailing patterns of interaction between IR scholars in the CEE and those in the West?

A contribution should not exceed 2,500 words in length. A selection of contributions will be published in JIRD, vol. 12, no. 2.
Deadline for abstracts (200 words): 30 April 2008.
