Avian influenza pandemic

Every day brings new reports of human cases of avian influenza in Vietnam - and heightened concern about another pandemic. Although manufacturers, governments, and international organizations are fully aware that a simple change in the virus could trigger human-to-human transmission of a virulent strain, they seem unable to move forward effectively with appropriate urgency. How will they produce adequate quantities of the right vaccine when needed? We asked David Fedson to scrutinize the current situation - the science, politics, and economics. When we received his manuscript we felt the need to serve the public health interest in immediate release of this article rather than to await our quarterly publication schedule. We welcome letters on this provocative commentary.
