Extremism in the Defense of Moderation: A Response to My Critics*
Andrew Rehfeld1
1Washington University in Saint Louis
*Although we clearly, and strongly, disagree about the role that majorities should play in the ordinary operation of institutions, this should not cloud the gratitude and appreciation I have for the scholars in this symposium for taking so seriously my arguments. More particularly, I begin with a note of thanks to Peter Stone for arranging the symposium and my deepest appreciation to him, and to David Canon, Michael James, and Melissa Williams for their attentiveness to my argument. I also thank Eric MacGilvray, Melissa Schwartzberg, and Karen Zivi for comments about these remarks and to Tom Brunell and Joel Parker for earlier conversations. Finally, I thank Andrew Polsky, editor of Polity, for editorial comments and making this forum possible.
